BRICS Calls for Stronger Maritime Security Cooperation

(MENAFN) A top Russian official has called on BRICS nations to enhance strategic maritime cooperation to improve security along global shipping routes and counter threats such as Western piracy.

Nikolay Patrushev, a presidential aide and chairman of the Russian Maritime Board, said the bloc “needs to be given a full-fledged strategic maritime dimension,” emphasizing the potential benefits of closer collaboration at sea.

Patrushev noted that BRICS countries are already participating in joint naval exercises. In January and February, the “Will for Peace 2026” drills were conducted off the coast of Cape Town. The exercises included forces from Russia, China, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

The exercises followed closely after US forces seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker, which Moscow claims was unfairly targeted under sanctions against Venezuela. Patrushev framed these naval maneuvers as a demonstration of BRICS’ growing ability to safeguard maritime routes and ensure the security of member states’ shipping interests.
