PLA Holds “Combat Readiness” Exercises in South China Sea

(MENAFN) On Saturday, China’s armed forces carried out "combat readiness" maneuvers involving military aircraft and naval vessels in the contested South China Sea, as reported by official outlets.

According to a media outlet, the Southern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) mobilized both maritime and aerial units to execute a readiness patrol across the territorial seas and airspace surrounding Huangyan Dao and nearby zones.

Huangyan Dao—also referred to as Scarborough Shoal or Bajo de Masinloc—is a disputed maritime feature in the South China Sea that is likewise claimed by the Philippines.
For years, the shoal has remained a major point of friction in ongoing maritime disagreements between Beijing and Manila.

"Since January, the theater command has continuously strengthened naval and air patrols in the waters and airspace around the island, resolutely countering provocations and infringements by individual countries in the region, firmly safeguarding China’s national sovereignty and security, and maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea," the state-run media said.

Footage made public by the Chinese military revealed that an H-6K strategic bomber equipped with YJ-12 anti-ship missiles, along with the Type 055 large destroyer Xianyang, participated in the exercises alongside additional aircraft and naval platforms.

These most recent drills were announced shortly after the Chinese Defense Ministry disclosed last week that two high-ranking military leaders—Zhang Youxia, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), and Liu Zhenli, a CMC member and head of the CMC Joint Staff Department—are currently under investigation.
