India takes firm stand on refusing to open its market for US products
Officials indicated that while New Delhi might consider slightly increasing imports of US rice, such a step would not significantly affect domestic farmers.
The government, however, “remains unequivocal on agriculture,” emphasizing that the sector is closely linked to rural livelihoods and national food security and therefore cannot be exposed to foreign competition within a trade agreement, as stated by reports.
Sources noted that India is, nonetheless, ready to offer commitments in areas such as defense, clean energy, and liquefied natural gas (LNG), which are considered strategically important and high-value industries.
Last week, a delegation headed by the Deputy US Trade Representative visited India to advance discussions. This marked the second visit by US officials since the imposition of a 25% reciprocal tariff and an additional 25% levy on New Delhi in response to its purchases of Russian oil.
Despite criticism over its energy dealings with Russia, India has defended its approach, asserting that its policy is guided by “national interest,” while simultaneously strengthening trade relations with the US. In November, India secured a significant deal to import liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States.
While there is cautious optimism about reaching a trade agreement, US President Donald Trump earlier this month threatened further sanctions, alleging that India is dumping rice in American markets.
Reports also indicate that India has presented its most competitive trade proposals to the US so far. The United States remains India’s largest export destination, with shipments totaling $52 billion in the first seven months of the current fiscal year.
